Understand your strengths and weaknesses
We identify three major business skill sets Communicator, Craftsman and Organizer.
- Communicator is someone who is skilled to interact with people. This person is better in sales, marketing, and public relations.
- Craftsman is one that has skills and passion to make stuff with own hands. This person is better in producing tangible things.
- Organizer is an individual that is skilled in managing people and organizations. Such person is good in management, project management, supervision etc.
There are specific skills that are relevant to each of the tree categories. List all than you have in detail under each category. You will see that a picture begins to emerge. Most people are very strong in one area, somewhat strong in the other and there is a big gap for the third.
Identify strengths and compensate for weaknesses
Most importantly one has to honestly identify the strengths and decide how to compensate for weaknesses. To run a business successfully you have to be a well rounded in all three areas. This does not mean that the entrepreneur has to wait until acquiring all the knowledge to start a business.
To compensate for weaknesses you should consider taking classes, reading appropriate books, find a mentor or bring a trusted partners with complimentary skills. Genuinely understanding the level of personal strengths and weaknesses would only benefit you. Knowing what to compensate for own deficiencies will make you list likely prey for unneeded and unwanted services.
Diverse background and experience are very helpful because a business owner has to multitask daily to successfully operate the business. It will allow you to adapt easily to ever changing environment and to expand on new markets. Most importantly is will increase the chances for success and help you make correct decisions.
