In the United States, we have a heavy burden to carry. We boast of the “American Dream,” where hard work and dedication reaps riches, success, and earned us the title of the “Promised Land.”
We strongly believe in a tireless work ethic and appropriate compensation for our hard work. We take pride in our unselfish giving and generosity towards others. We root emphatically for the underdog and throw our full support behind the underfunded and unappreciated. Though Hollywood is obsessed with the heartwarming “rags to riches” stories, it doesn’t effectively capture the true American culture and experience. The American culture is best exemplified by the day to day grind of the American small business.

As I work with an online clothing store, I encounter the full American culture every day. I, along with the owner, started a grassroots campaign; telling our family and friends, enlisting coworkers to help spread the word, and passing out as many business cards as we could. We establish relationships with our favorite restaurants and, due to their generosity, are able to leave promotional materials there. On a day to day basis, we interact with people who match up perfectly to us and the society that we live in; generous, hard working people that are willing to help out those who need a boost. It is this that is the essence of America’s culture; an idea that is destined to provide everything that one could want in life if given support. No business starts big; yet every business starts with a big idea. Some businesses flourish while others parish. Ironically, even the ones that don’t make it still have a lot of hard work and dedication put into it. This land gives everyone hope that all it takes is for their idea to hit the right eyes and ears in order for them to prosper. The giving nature of the people here facilitates a welcome environment that encourages new ideas and has plenty of resources for those who need guidance. And of course, there is the abundance of citizens who go out of their way to support and small business instead of pumping money into big business.

The small business is what the United States was founded on
. The idea that one could have a great idea, even if they weren’t born in this country, and be provided with all of the opportunity in the world to succeed is what continues to drive this nation forward. Though many parts of big business is getting exported, one sector is guaranteed to always remain on American soil and stay true to America’s culture: the American small business.
